I like using linux, but frankly, the remote connection options are just horrible. Windows really rules with regards to remotely connecting to a graphical desktop, it’s just builtin and there. On linux it generally boils down to;
- Teamviewer: No thanks, I got hacked before with it!
- VNC: Slow and a pain to setup session numbers etc etc… Seems to work on some clients, not others… Ugh.
- X11 Forwarding: I actually havent tried in earnest, but im sure it’s fiddly

So, the ideal solution for me is just to have a Linux distro support RDP out of the box. I don’t really know of any that do this (email me if you do) so i’m going to document how to do it in Linux Mint 20 Cinnamon edition. This is my general goto distro, and it is super easy.
Then get your ip address using ifconfig
and then use a remote desktop client to RDP to that IP, enter your username and password, and voila!
I work on Windows servers mostly but usually I would connect to them using my local Linux Mint workstation. In this post I will quickly run through how I connect to the Windows Servers using the RDP protocol.
First we need to setup a Remote Desktop Client. In the Software Manager you will a lot of Remote Desktop clients. I use Remmina.
Important point here is to install both Remmina and Remmina-plugin-rdp. Installing the rdp plugin is important otherwise when you launch Remmina, you would not see the Remote Desktop protocol listed. Only SFTP and SSH plugins are added by default.
After this step it is very easy to connect. Just launch Remmina from the Menu.

You will be presented with a Quick connect screen. Give the connection a name so that you can easily reconnect to the server later. If you keep the name as Quick connect, the Save button is greyed out.

Enter the details , click on Save or Connect and you are now are connected to your favorite Windows server!
