Microsoft has officially ended support for Office for Mac 2011 as scheduled, nearly seven years after the software suite was first released. 2011 versions of Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint. The most recent version of Apple’s MacOS — known as Catalina — is having a major impact on those that upgraded without understanding that their older 32-bit programs would no longer run. Microsoft only supports Office 365 subscriptions, or the single-purchase, Office 2019 for Mac on Catalina because these suites are 64-bit. Office 2011 was never tested on even High Sierra and was retired in Oct 2017. Office 2008 was retired several years earlier.

Jun 12, 2019 Using technical terminology. These older applications are what we call 32-bit applications and they will no longer work with macOS Catalina. Instead, macOS Catalina only supports what we call 64-bit applications. Microsoft officially stopped supporting and fixing security holes in Office 2011, including Word 2011, in the fall of 2017. I just want to call you out on some BS – ‘very old versions of Word and Excel that were 32-bit’ – excuse me, everything on my Mac was 32-bit until this latest update, Catalina. And ‘the developers need a sustainable way to update software’ just means they want more money for mostly the same product. 100 dollars a year?

macOS Catalina (due in late September) will be dropping support for 32bit apps. macOS Mojave has been warning us about this every time we launch one of these apps and action on your part will be needed soon. One of the most popular 32bit apps we see is Microsoft Office 2011, which includes Word, Excel and PowerPoint. If you have been limping along with Office 2008, the same warning applies. See the icons below to determine which version you have.

If you are planning on upgrading to Catalina in the fall when it is released, why not save yourself some grief and upgrade to the 2019 version of Office now? The “perpetual” version is $149 (for Word, Excel and PowerPoint) and Office 365 starts at $69 a year.

If you have Office 2016 or 2019, you can open the Microsoft AutoUpdate app to find out if there are updated versions of Office. Alternatively, click “Help” in Word, Excel or PowerPoint and “Check for Updates”.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Office 2016 and 2019 need to be upgraded to the latest “builds”. Build 16.16.11 or later is required for Office 2016, and build 16.26 or later is required for Office 2019. It would be advisable to do this BEFORE upgrading to Catalina, as it may require reinstalling from Microsoft if you upgrade to Catalina first.

Method 1: Set Document Language

To set Document Language, follow these steps:

  1. Open a document in Word for Mac.

  2. On the Edit menu, click Select All.

  3. On the Tools menu, click Language.

  4. Select the language dictionary you want the speller to use, such as English (US).

  5. Uncheck Do not check spelling or grammar, and then click OK.

If the problem continues to occur, go to the next method.

Method 2: Set the language for the default Normal.dotm template

To set the Normal.dotm template language settings, follow these steps:

  1. Open a blank document in Word for Mac.

  2. On the Edit menu, click Select All.

  3. On the Tools menu, click Language.

  4. Select the language dictionary you want the speller to use, such as English (US).

  5. Uncheck Do not check spelling or grammar, and then click Default.

  6. Click Yes to accept changes that will affect all new documents based on the NORMAL template.

  7. Click OK.

If the problem continues to occur, go to the next method.

Method 3: Check the Spelling and Grammar preferences

To check the spelling and grammar preferences, follow these steps:

  1. Open Word for Mac.

  2. On the Word menu, click Preferences.

  3. Under Authoring and Proofing Tools, click Spelling and Grammar.

  4. The following options should be selected (checked):

    • Check spelling as you type

    • Check grammar as you type

  5. The following options should not be selected (unchecked):

    • Hide spelling errors in this document

    • Hide grammatical errors in this document

  6. Click OK.

If the problem continues to occur, go to the next method.

Method 4: Check the Input Sources language settings

To check the Input Sources language settings, follow these steps:

  1. Quit all Office applications.

  2. On the Apple menu, click System Preferences.

  3. Under Personal, click Language & Text.

  4. Click Input Sources.

  5. Set the Input Sources language to the desired language Word should use.

  6. Restart the Mac.

If the problem continues to occur, go to the next method.

Method 5: Move the Normal.dotm template

Important If Normal.dotm is renamed, damaged, or moved, Word automatically creates a new version the next time you start Word. The new version will not include any of the customizations that you made to the version that you renamed or moved.
To move the Normal.dotm template, follow these steps:

  1. Quit all Office applications.

  2. On the Go menu, click Home.

  3. Open Library.
    Note The Library folder is hidden in Mac OS X Lion. To display this folder, hold down the OPTION key while you click the Go menu.

  4. Open Application Support, and then Microsoft.

  5. Open Office, and then User Templates.

  6. Drag normal.dotm to the desktop.

  7. Restart the Mac.

If the problem is resolved, you can drag the normal.dotm file from the desktop to the Trash.
If the problem continues to occur, go to the next method.

Method 6: Remove Word preferences

To remove Word preferences, follow these steps:

  1. Quit all Office applications.

  2. On the Go menu, click Home.

  3. Open Library.
    Note The Library folder is hidden in Mac OS X Lion. To display this folder, hold down the OPTION key while you click the Go menu.

  4. Open Preferences.

  5. Drag com.microsoft.word.plist and the Microsoft folder to the desktop.

  6. Restart the Mac.
